Congratulations on your new job! Here are some tips to help you get started at your new workplace.
Questions to ask yourself to help you advocate for yourself on the job
Orientation and Training
- What helps you learn?
- Are you better at learning through reading, watching a video, or by doing the job?
- How do you like to communicate?
- Do you have any communication needs?
Good communication is key to being successful at work. Share these with your supervisor and coworkers so that everyone is on the same page from the start.
- Will you have a job coach?
- Do you want a coworker to support you at work?
Tell your supervisor if you will have a job coach and work as a team to decide what this partnership will be like. If you want support from a coworker, you can ask them to help train you or for help with specific tasks.
- How many hours do you want to work a week?
- How long do you want your shifts to be?
- What time of day do you want to work?
You may not be able to control your schedule but you can tell your supervisor what hours and times work best for you to be successful.
It is up to you to advocate for yourself at work. Communicate your needs to your employer so they can support you in ways that work for you.
